Riichi Mahjong
Riichi is the Japanese ruleset that most of the modern competitive mahjong scene plays. It rewards concealed hands and rich pattern-building rather than raw speed, which makes it the deepest of the three rulesets on this site and the most rewarding to study.

- The core loop is the same as any four-player mahjong: draw a tile, discard a tile, and build four sets plus a pair.
- Riichi puts a premium on keeping your hand concealed. Calling tiles from other players closes off many scoring patterns.
- A hand needs at least one scoring pattern to be declared, so a hand that is merely complete is not always a winning hand.
- Seven pairs and thirteen orphans count as alternative winning shapes, both of which require a fully concealed hand.
策略要點
- Concealed hands score much better here than under Hong Kong rules. Resist calling unless the call takes you straight to ready.
- All-simples is the workhorse pattern: no terminals, no honours. It is reachable from almost any starting hand.
- Dealt four or more pairs early, seven pairs is often a faster route to ready than forcing four sets.
- Late in the hand, watch which tiles the other seats have stopped discarding. That is usually where their wait is.

How is Riichi different from Chinese mahjong?
Riichi requires a scoring pattern before a win can be declared, values concealed hands more highly, and uses a different scoring table. The draw-and-discard core is the same, so the two transfer easily.
Is this a good place to learn Riichi?
It is a good place to get comfortable with the flow, the calls and the common patterns. The readiness hint shows how far you are from a complete hand, which is the single most useful thing for a new player to see.
