How to use the score calculator
Most mahjong calculators ask you to count fan and fu yourself, then convert that number into points. This mahjong score calculator reads the tiles. Enter a completed Hong Kong hand, mark the winning tile, choose self-draw or discard, and the tool matches the hand against the patterns the site engine already uses at the table.
Hong Kong scoring is fan-based. Standard tables need three fan to declare a win; casual chicken-hand tables are a different mode and are not the default here. Patterns such as all simples, a dragon pung, or a self-draw each contribute fan, and limit hands such as big three dragons or thirteen orphans sit at the top of the scale.
The calculator rebuilds a minimal game state with createGame, then calls the same scoreHand function the practice tables use. Defaults are East seat and East round so seat-wind and round-wind fan are included when your hand has those pungs. Open advanced options to change either wind before scoring.
If the tiles do not form a winning shape, you get a clear message and a link to the hand checker instead of a fake total. If the hand wins on paper but has fewer than three fan, the patterns are listed with an explanation that the minimum has not been met — the tool never pretends a 1-fan hand is a legal win on a standard table.
Japanese riichi calculators will not answer Hong Kong questions correctly: pinfu is worth zero fan here, and several riichi-only yaku do not exist. Use this page for Hong Kong mahjong, and keep riichi tools for riichi tables. Everything runs in your browser with no upload and no download.
Frequently asked questions
- Does this calculator count patterns or only convert fan?
- It reads the hand and matches patterns. You do not enter a fan total yourself — that is the difference from most online converters.
- Which ruleset is used?
- Hong Kong mahjong in standard mode (3-fan minimum). Casual chicken-hand scoring is not the default on this page.
- Why are seat wind and round wind defaults East?
- A rebuilt practice state needs winds to score wind pungs. East/East is the createGame default and is stated in the UI. Change them under advanced options when your seat or the round differs.
- What if my hand is not complete?
- The score calculator only scores winning hands. Use the mahjong hand checker to measure shanten and waiting tiles first.
- Is my hand uploaded?
- No. Scoring runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is stored or sent to a server.
